Events have a spirit of their own and must change with society to survive. The Sargent Fair has survived these changes and is still our largest celebration and community happenings. The Sargent Fair is almost as old as Sargent but actually started as a harvest celebration. As crops and harvests grew larger… the warm autumns seemed to grow shorter. This provoked the Fair’s change in schedule from an autumn to a summer event.
The 1980’s gave us many things to remember with a smile: The Rubiks Cube- Parachute Pants – Max Headroom and George Strait – Once again our little fair needed to make some changes. In a decade where “out of the ordinary” became normal our celebration needed an identity of it’s own thus the worlds first and only Chokecherry Jamboree was born. Now you may find more Chokecherry events but we were the first! The Chokecherry Jamboree was an event separate to the fair in its inception. However, the community’s desire for one larger festival quickly merged the two events. Along with the carnival the festival features Mud Drags, a Pit Spitting Contest, a Parade, entertainment, BBQ's & pancake feeds, and the Little Miss Chokecherry Pageant. The first contest was among HS girls. Interest in the contest became stronger among younger girls and the Little Miss Chokecherry Pageant is now open to 1st and 2nd grade girls. |
